Main Task: Evaluation FINAL

Main Task: Post Production Feedback

Main Task: Double Page Spread FINAL

Main Task: Contents Page FINAL

Main Task: Front Cover FINAL

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

I am going to use this for the front cover of my magazine because it has some variety of colour and is quite eye catching.

I am going to use this photo for my double page spread because it is an image of two people showing the right genre of what my magazine is based around.

I dont think I will use this for my contents page because it has quite alot of background in it and would take quite a while to edit out.

I am going to use this image for my contents page because there is a different variety of colour and is bright and will keep the reader interested.

Main Task: Case Study Of A Publishing House

Conde Nast publications is the most leading and major publishing company in the states. The company has produced over 18 popular consumer magazines, some examples are Vogue, Vanity fair and GQ. Although the publication isn't based in the United Kingdom, I feel that it would be a suitable publishing company for my magazine and the genre I am doing.

The company currently covers a range of assets; for example here are a few assets they cover, Fashion and Lifestyle, Home, Bridal and many more. I feel that my hip-hop magazine will be successful as they have published footwear magazines like 'FN'. I believe that by publishing my magazine it will attract a larger range of readers and subscribers mainly because I am doing a hip hop genre and there are lots of people who enjoy hip-hop music and dance. This will be beneficial to the company as it will widen their range of assets and increase the amound of readers/subscribers and they will also gain a wide variety of people from teens to more younger adults. They will gain a different target audience mainly from the United Kingdom and Conde Nast will be the first company to be involved in a unique type of magazine genre in the states.

The magazines that are published by the company attract more females rather than men and this is based on the amount of fashion magazines that they publish. The age range that the publications appeal to is wide as their magazines focus on different assets. Magazines that have something to do with fashion and current trends such as Vogue, Glamour and Style will attract young adults or teenagers unlike magazines like The New Yorker will mainly appeal to adults and business men/women based on it's formality. Alternatively, while it may seem they have a large audience and variety of different readers, they are known to focus on a particular class and age group instead of targetting a certain target audience.

My magazine will mainly appeal to young readers - particularly those who are interest in music and dance, as there are many aspects within the hip hop genre. The benefits for the company will attract a whole new different audience, subscribers and readers including their current readers. The company chooses to appeal to different age groups, genders and people to get more money and by publishing my magazine, they can do so.

This is just one example of the types of magazines that Conde Nast Digital publish. This is of a famous singer called beyonce, this would give the publishing house a lot of business because beyonce is a popular subject/person who people will find interesting.

Main Task: Profiling Your Audience

The 'All About Hip-Hop' Reader: Carl is a 17 year old boy who has a massive passion for music all kinds of music not just Hip-Hop but R'n'B And Grime And Also Rap. Carl is in full time education, he gets a certain amount each month from EMA and anything else that his parents give him. And with that money Carl will go and spend that on any new music albums coming out or on anything musical that catches his eye. Carl loves to read the 'All About Hip-Hop' magazine as it inspires him about new music, all the latest gossip on his favourite singers. Music is a massive part of Carl's social life and when he gets the chance he sometimes will go to a few concerts with his friends or maybe invite them all round to his for some food, listen to music and just chill and relax. Carl is very understanding of the latest technology which increases his knowledge of music because nowadays music is all about technology. Through being a massive music lover Carl is also interested in sociallising, TV and film.

Main Task: Audience Research

I asked six different people a variety of eleven questions to find out what their views were on hip hop music and what they would like to see in hip hop magazines. After asking the different people the questions i then took a screen grab of their replies and this will help me to create my music magazine with their help.

These are the questions i asked the different people.

1) what do you think the main age for a hip hop magazine is?
2) do you think more females or males enjoy hip hop?
3) do you feel that people should have to pay for magazines?
4) do you think hip hop magazines should give information about new single/album releases?
5) what type of clothing do you think hip hop people wear?
6) what genre do you think is popular nowadays?
7) name two of your favourite dances?
8) do you like dance?
9) what genre do you prefer more, hip hop or grime?
10) would you like to learn to dance?
11) what is your idea of dance?

Here are a few examples of different peoples responses.

After analysing the responses I recieved I am not going to be charging people for my magazine because it's for a target audience of teenagers which is 15+ and where they're teenagers they won't have much money so they wont be able to afford to buy magazines weekly, and also i am going to be providing my readers with new album and singles releases who that this keeps the reader interested and involved so that they are tempted to purchase my magazine every week. I will be going with a bright colour scheme so that it represents hip hop and so that it stands out and i will have a main image on my front cover showing a young teenager representing the hip hop look.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation: The double page spread consists of a dull black and white photograph with the man looking slightly down towards an angle. The camera shot that has been taken here is a medium close up showing his head and only part of his body with one hand up in the air pointing to the sky. There isn't much of a background as it's quite plain and simple.

Colour Scheme: The colour scheme set out on this double page spread is consistant as there is only 2 main colours used which are black and white but a light blue colour is used only in one small section of the double page spread.

Image: One main large image taking up one whole side of the double page spread. The subject of the image has his head tilted down to a certain angle with only showing part of his body and has one hand showing pointing to the sky or what ever is above his head.

Subject Name: Amongst the double page spread is a certain section which is highlighted that grabs the readers attention most and this happens to be the section that is highlighted in the light blue colour. It is the only section on the double page spread that is in a different colour to the colour scheme and so therefor it stands out.

Stand-first: The stand first for this double page spread is the first section of writing that you see on the first page and this sections starts with the words 'after well over 20 years' and so on. You can tell that this is the stand-first because it is the first paragraph that is presented on the double page spread.

Quotes: The quote that is used in this double page spread is not a very clear understanding as to where it is located. It is located at the bottom left of the first page but is a very small font so it is quite hard to read and understand; but when you are able to read and understand then you can see that it is well put together and presented in a good way. You can see where it is placed on the double page spread.

By-Line: The section where the journalist name is presented is at the bottom of the left hand side on the first page. It isn't quite clear or understanding of where it is and it doesn't give a good description of anything such as the setting, lighting or anything else. It is quite a dull piece of writing and isn't understood very well.

Main Task: Introduction

Hello my name is Amy Smalldon. I study media at Christ The King Sixthform College. By my teacher i have been set a task by my teachers to do the following: Front cover, contents page and a double spread for a music magazine. My magazine is going to be based on a hip-hop based genre and for this project i am going to be doing research on a different variety of hip-hop magazines and discussing the different textual layout and coverlines and all the different research methods there are.

I chose to study this course at Christ The King Sixthform College because i like to be creative and have a good understanding of the different varieties of magazines that are solds world wide. This course involves a lot of picture taking and i do enjoy taking pictures, not just of myself but of the surrounding around me. I will be looking at the way different hip-hop magazines are layed out and the different ways they are written.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation: The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a young attractive women looking directly into the camera. This shot is a medium close up showing her head, arms and waist. She is standing with the strike of a little pose giving of a 'slutty' look with the costume she's wearing. A leotard outfit with what looks like an american looking police hat. The background of the photograph is a mixture of two blues, dark and light and also the photograph image covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the image is a 'vibe' masthead and to the sides of the image there are several different coverlines in white and red.

Masthead: Vibe masthead is very distinctive: plain white with no outline or drop shadow just a plain simple heading. The font for the masthead is similar to 'sans serif' and it is all in capital letters. The font used is similar to the font that is used on the 'heat' magazine and cannotes the popular trends going on around the world as this font is used quite a lot. The name 'Vibe' isn't a very well known name so it suggests that it's a new thing going on, something new to try and is suggesting that you 'try something new' everyday.

Character: The cover photographer is of one of Keri Hilson the worlds well known singer and is very popular in the industry. Keri has been known to play a role if a film that hasn't yet been released 'rip the runway 11' as a performer. Keri is the type of character that is always changing her look, always wanting to be unique and many of her fans tend to try and be more and more like her everyday.

Composision: She is posed in a very suggestive 'get over here' kind of way. Her pose, body language and costume are previewed in a very sexually suggestive way.

Costume: Keri's clothing is a very tight seductive leotard outfit, showing lots of cleavage. This costume has clearly been given a lot of though and chosen carefully to appeal to a wide range of a target audience of the magazine, who are most likely going to be male and they like that 'bad girl' type but some female may look into this magazine as they like Keri Hilson as a singer and look up to her as a role model.

NVC: Her non verbal communication is also very seductive as she is flaunting what she has and with her mouth slightly open showing off her white teeth and her eyes half open looking directly into the camera.

Lighting: The lighting is high key and the photograph is designed to display the brightness of Keri's future and that she is looking to go far.

Setting: The setting has two different colours of background a light blue and also a dark. This cannotes that there can be a dark side to the singer and that you can't always judge a book by it's cover. Her costume blends in more with the dark side of the front cover as it's darker and more mysterious.

Cover-Lines: The main cover line that relates to her photograph says 'Keri Hilson has been a very bad girl'. This relates to the pose and her body language in the photograph. The different cover lines tell us that this magazine doesn't just concentrate on the sexual pose that Keri is doing, it also concentrates on other singers/rappists/music producers and different song genres. The cover lines don't just talk about music and artists and producers it also talks about life going on in the populated area such as 'Teenagers merked for death' this shows that there is alot of crime going about involving teenagers and that it has become so bad that it is resulting to death. The only thing mentioned on the cover lines that doesn't relate to music is that they're advertising open gifts on a certain page. All the fonts used are the same through out and this cannotes tradition, it shows that 'vibe' magazine hasn't been going for long but it's consistancy of font style wants to be continued for a long period of time. This explains to the readers of 'vibe' magazine that they will recieve accurate and challenging information.

Target Audience: By taking a glance at this photograph on this front cover you can tell that the magazine is suitable to anyone; male or female and that it is suitable for the ages of 16 and over. They would have a good knowledge and understanding of what is being produced in the magazine and a definite interest in a wide range of music and new relseases in the music industry. They are likely to be well educated in the magazine and will have an interest in music, even more than what some young adults do already.
